Born and raised in Singapore, Alemay is no stranger to performing having started at the age of 4. Despite having a diploma in Mass Communication and a degree in Advertising, this multi-talented 29-yr-old chose to pursue her passion for performing and hasn’t looked back since. Infamous for her sultry vocal stylings and gutsy personality, Alemay’s unmistakeable warmth on stage has made her one of the most unique performers in her field.
She started doing voiceovers at the age of 10 and now does voiceovers for local commercials such as Canon, L’Oreal and Dove chocolate. Her first professional stage performance was at age 11 as Louis Von Trapp in STARS production of The Sound of Music and she went on to do many more stage performances such as Singapore Repertory Theatre’s (SRT) Ah Kong’s Birthday Party and The Snow Queen which was nominated for Best Ensemble Cast at the 2006 DBS Life! Theatre Awards. For the last 5 years, she has also been directing Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges for the Singapore Youth Festival Drama Competitions. She’s edited and written in magazines, appeared on several TV shows, and presented on two local radio stations: Gold 90.5 FM and former arts station, Passion 99.5 FM.
Singing has always been her one true passion and like many performers, she started in her neighbourhood parish choir where she served as choir chairperson and conductress. Since those humble beginnings, she has gone on to sing on the soundtrack for local movie Chicken Rice War as well as the theme song for local TV series Spin. She has made special appearances for a myriad of functions including Upper Club New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner 2005 where she sang with Bobby Soul formerly from legendary soul group The Platters. She’s been a guest performer for Kumar’s Valentine’s Day Concerts 2004/5. She’s also performed with Dick Lee at a number of his shows including the AdAsia Congress in Jaipur, India as well as his 30th Anniversary concert at the Kallang Theatre. She’s the voice behind theme songs for the World Down Syndrome Congress & The World Lottery Association Convention when they were held in Singapore.
Her first solo concert was part of the Late Nite series @ The Esplanade with Babes Conde on piano in 2004. Her second was an intimate showcase backed by the stellar line-up of Mei Sheum on keys, Joshua Wan on bass, Regi Leo on guitar and local drumming legend, Tama Goh in 2005. She trained in New York with vocal coach Tania Travers and with celebrity vocal coach Dave Stroud when he was in Singapore April 2006. Dave is Executive Director for Seth Riggs Speech Level Singing.
Alemay had the privilege of being part of the Mosaic Music Festival All Star Jam Session last year where she got to jam with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Larry Braggs from Tower of Power & Claude McKnight from Take 6.
She was fortunate enough to be the featured vocalist at the recent unveiling of the new Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 with Tama Goh’s Caravan Jazz Band.
She perfomed to rave reviews in People’s Association Sound Waves Series SingaPOPera! which was also featured in the entertainment showcase for the exclusive ASEAN Summit Opening Dinner hosted by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Nov 2007.
Alemay started 2008 on stage as Rosemary Joseph in W!ld Rice’s staging of Beauty World 20th Anniversary production, which was also featured in the President’s Star Charity Sep 2007.
She then left for Manila at the end of January 2008 to perform as Jeremy Monteiro’s guest artiste for the SingaporEncore cultural presentation where Minster Lee Boon Yang was Guest-of-Honour.
She is now truly inspired after recently attending Grammy award winning Jazz singer Kurt Elling’s masterclass at this year’s Mosaic Music festival.
She performed for the Young President’s Organisation Gala Dinner held in Singapore as well as the PRISM Awards ceremony where President & Mrs Nathan remembered her from her stint in Beauty World The Musical.
She is artiste-in-residence at Singapore’s leading jazz venue Jazz@Southbridge and also performs at Bar Stop on Devonshire for happy hour on Thursdays & Fridays.
Come April, she will be performing with Jeremy Monteiro & Greg Lyons at Velvet Underground’s Thursday Jazz Night for a limited run.
